In an environmentally conscious stride toward sustainable waste management, Manatee County in Florida is advancing a $50 million renewable natural gas (RNG) project at the Lena Road Landfill. Teaming up with Nopetro Energy and Johnson Controls, the county is set to embark on the construction of a landfill gas-to-RNG facility. Scheduled to break ground in 2026 and begin operations in 2027, this project stands as a significant development in the realm of renewable energy.

The overarching goal of this initiative is to convert methane, a potent greenhouse gas commonly found in landfills, into pipeline-quality renewable natural gas. By capturing and repurposing methane emissions that would otherwise contribute to environmental pollution, the project aims to reduce the county’s carbon footprint. Methane is more than 25 times as potent as carbon dioxide in trapping heat in the atmosphere, making its capture and conversion crucial in combating climate change.
