Waste to Wealth: Manatee County’s Bold $50 Million Methane Conversion Project

Last Updated: December 4, 2025By

In an ambitious move toward sustainable energy and environmental stewardship, Manatee County has embarked on a groundbreaking initiative to transform waste into a resource. Nopetro Energy, a South Florida-based energy company, is poised to spearhead a $50 million project aimed at converting methane gas emitted from the Lena Road Landfill into renewable natural gas (RNG). This innovative project underscores the increasing focus on sustainable waste management practices and bringing environmental and economic benefits to the community.

Methane, a potent greenhouse gas, is currently flared at landfills to prevent its release into the atmosphere. By capturing this methane and transforming it into RNG, the project not only reduces harmful emissions but also creates a viable energy source, aligning with broader environmental goals. The construction of this facility, scheduled for 2026, will set the stage for RNG production beginning in 2027. This advancement marks a significant step in the county’s long-term strategy for sustainable waste management.

The agreement between Nopetro Energy and Manatee County commissioners is structured around renewable one-year leases, with the potential to extend up to 20 years. This approach offers flexibility and ensures that the county retains oversight while continuously benefiting from this green initiative. Revenue generated from the project will create a new income stream for the county, turning what was once a wasted byproduct into a financially advantageous asset.

This project is part of a larger trend of landfill-to-energy projects across the United States, reflecting a growing recognition of the need to address environmental challenges with innovative solutions. As construction begins next year, Manatee County finds itself at the forefront of a transformative era in waste management, exemplifying how strategic public-private partnerships can drive both economic growth and environmental sustainability.
