Stay Safe by the Shore: Manatee County’s New Life Vest Initiative on Anna Maria Island

Last Updated: March 5, 2026By

In a proactive move to bolster beach safety, Manatee County has launched the “Beach Like a Local” initiative on Anna Maria Island, offering complimentary life vests to enhance visitor safety. This initiative, introduced by the Bradenton Area Convention and Visitors Bureau on March 4, 2026, is strategically positioned to address the need for safety measures in areas away from lifeguard supervision.

The initiative makes available 64 U.S. Coast Guard-approved life vests at two convenient locations: one by the Sandbar Seafood + Spirits Restaurant on the Gulf side, and the other at Bayfront Park. Visitors are encouraged to borrow and return the vests, fostering a responsible and community-driven approach to safety. This innovative program is a product of the Manatee County Supervisory Leadership Program, demonstrating a collaborative effort from local leaders to create a safer beach experience.

“Beach Like a Local” is an extension of the “Love It Like a Local” campaign, which aims to instill a sense of responsibility and care among both residents and tourists. This initiative complements the efforts of the Manatee Public Beaches Patrol, which proudly operates 11 lifeguard towers and was celebrated with the Beach Patrol of the Year award in 2025.

According to the U.S. Coast Guard, drowning is a leading cause of accidental death, particularly in beaches lacking lifeguards. The provision of life vests in unguarded areas addresses this concern directly, offering an additional layer of protection. It encourages safe swimming practices, ensuring that beachgoers, whether they are locals or tourists, can enjoy the natural beauty of Anna Maria Island with peace of mind.

By integrating proactive safety measures into the community fabric, Manatee County sets a commendable precedent for other coastal areas. The “Beach Like a Local” initiative is a testament to the county’s commitment to public safety, showing an innovative approach to addressing the complexities of beach safety dynamics.
