Storm Ready: Manatee County Launches ‘Operation: Sandbag Support’!

Last Updated: July 18, 2025By

As hurricane season looms over South Florida, Manatee County is taking proactive steps to safeguard its residents through “Operation: Sandbag Support.” This initiative, spearheaded by the Manatee County Department of Public Safety and Community & Veterans Services, is a timely response to the region’s vulnerability to severe storms. On July 18, 2025, the department launched a sandbag distribution program designed to help residents protect their homes and properties against potential flood damage.

The sandbag drive-thru event, held at the Public Safety Complex in Bradenton, is open to all Manatee County residents, ensuring accessibility for everyone in need. Residents are encouraged to participate between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m., where they can conveniently collect sandbags without any prior eligibility requirements. This initiative demonstrates a commitment to community preparedness, emphasizing the importance of being storm-ready before severe weather strikes.

Recognizing the unique needs of its senior citizens, particularly those in high-risk zones, the county also offers a thoughtful delivery option. Residents aged 60 or older, who are transportation-dependent and reside in Evacuation Level A or B zones, qualify for home delivery of up to 10 sandbags per household. This provision underscores the county’s dedication to inclusivity and its acknowledgment of the logistical challenges faced by older residents.

Participation in the delivery program is straightforward; eligible residents can complete an online form to request service. This form assists in verifying evacuation zones and transportation access, ensuring that help is directed to those who need it most.

County Commission Chair George Kruse reiterates the importance of this initiative, emphasizing that early preparation can significantly reduce the risk of property damage during hurricanes. “Operation: Sandbag Support” not only represents a significant preventive measure but also a community-driven effort to enhance resilience against natural disasters.
